Have you ever been here?–A full heart with an equally full mind? Not in the, “my heart is over-joyed!”, full.
Full as in heavy.
Full as in overloaded.
I often feel my brain is bursting at the seams.
A lot of the physical spaces in my home are a reflection of what my brain is doing. For instance, we have a space in our home called, “The Studio.” It’s a basement essentially, but we’ve turned it into a space where we create. My husband makes and records music and I make “stuff”. Like all the stuff. I’m sewing, I’m crocheting, I’m designing– you name it, I’m doing it.
Recently, frustrated with the clutter, I stopped to take a look around the studio. What I found were 7 open projects lying around me. Literally 7! I counted.
Things started but not finished.
The issue is I want to do all of these things. I’m extremely excited about every last one but one idea leads me to another…and another before finishing the one before.
It’s a reflection of the season I’m in. God has ignited such a passion in me to create. A passion to put my hand to the plow and start hammering away at some of the greatest desires in my heart.
I want to get out of debt. I want to build wealth. I want to remove financial roadblocks for others. I want to create a tradition of outrageous generosity in our family! These passions are burning!
But here’s the thing…Sometimes, I just don’t know where to start.
The honest truth.
God has given bits and pieces of my next steps and my heart and mind often want to outrun the process.
What I’m seeing here is when God exposes parts of your purpose, it’s only a little piece for so many reasons. It’s exposing areas that need growth.
I’ve prayed, I’ve fasted, I’ve been at the Lord’s feet for this “piece”, for this glimpse of purpose. Now I have a PIECE and I’m trying to run with it, trying to figure it out on my own?!
No. That ain’t it!
So, to wrap this up, I’m going to share what little nuggets I’ve learned in this so far and ask, if you’ve found yourself in this place too, to just sit with them.
Find some Word that ties it together, and make time to pursue God MORE for an additional “piece”.
1. ) You are not short of ideas. You are short of the mental capacity to contain them.
Get it out of your head. Write it down and put a date on it. I’ve seen quite a bit of things actually happen this year because I’ve stopped running it over in my brain and put it in writing.
We’ve been given creative power by our Father. The creator of all things. When He speaks a word, putting action to it, it happens.
We are no different. Put action on your ideas and thoughts by writing them down. Simple, right? This empties that space in your mind and allows it to be filled with other things.
2.) Write down what you hear God saying to you then go back and read it, over and over!
This one is actually pretty funny to me. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve asked God something over and over in prayer just to go back a few weeks in my journal and see that He’s already answered that prayer!
Or, something I have been doing was a result of an instruction the Lord has given me and I forgot it came from Him in the first place!
Once you get in the habit of writing things down, get in the habit of regularly reviewing what you’ve written down.
3.) Give God space to fill.
Pray, say what you need to say, then zip it!
Seriously though. Stop talking.
Stop thinking (I know that’s hard to do!).
Jesus has given us so many gifts. One of those gifts is communion with the Father. So commune. Allow for an exchange of dialogue when you pray.
Also, know that you don’t always need to start the dialogue either. You just need to create the space and present the invitation.
If you don’t know what to say, it’s ok. You don’t have to say anything. Invite God into your space and allow Him space to speak to YOU.
1I will climb up to my watchtower and stand at my guardpost. There I will wait to see what the Lord says and how he will answer my complaint.
